How taking supplements help with our skin
I have a blended family with my husband who is of Dutch descent. Our family consists of my 19 going on 20-year-old daughter, his recently turned 19-year-old daughter and his other 16 going on 17-year-old daughter. And while I value my family (sometimes – let’s be real, I am still a human), often as moms, we end up taking care of everyone else but ourselves.
I really noticed this when the 19 going on 20-year-old was about 16 and she started her skincare routine. She would literally take Sunday evenings and cleanse, exfoliate, apply a mask, tone, use serum and moisturize. At that time, I was still only a part of the wash face and moisturize club (this was clearly before I became a skincare specialist and facial therapist). It amazed me how much a 16-year-old could invest in her skin and as I mom I struggled so much…but did I struggle or did I make excuses…
Fast forward to when I became certified as a skincare specialist and facial therapist. My goal was (and still is) to offer moms insight and education about investing in themselves through skincare. As I continued down this journey of learning, there were things I realized – one of those realizations is that as estheticians and skincare specialists, we often talk about the external (and topical products) but what about the internal. Is it possible to care for our skin internally in conjunction with topically products. This brought me to my educational quest on trying to see how supplements (and diet) can help improve (or hurt) our skin.
As mothers, often one of our skincare goals is to age gracefully. This includes working on dull and tired skin and fine lines and wrinkles. The list below (while not exhaustive) will help you with supplements that can help with anti-aging skincare. Please note that this is for information purposes only and I am not a general practitioner or dermatologist (or even in the medical field) and cannot diagnose or cure you.
Collagen – helps to improve skin moisture, elasticity, and hydration when taken orally. Further, collagen improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and helps to even the skin. You can purchase collage here.
Digestive enzymes – helps to break down food which better allows the skin to absorb the nutrients. It also helps to cure leaky gut (irritation and inflammation in the skin) to help skin problems such as acne, eczema and rosacea. You can purchase digestive enzymes here.
Vitamin K2 & D3 (together) – helps to support bone health, which in turn improves skin elasticity. You can purchase this vitamin here.
Preventing early signs of aging is something that as mothers, we might want to invest in. When you feel better, you do better, and you can be better for those around you.
